Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of poverty in the program Bedah Rumah on the Asia Media Production Official YouTube channel episode 242, as well as to identify the meanings of denotation, connotation, and myth presented in the program. This research employs a qualitative method using the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes. Data were collected through video observation, scene screenshots, and relevant visual documentation, and then analyzed based on three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that poverty is represented through inadequate housing conditions, limited facilities, daily activities, and emotional expressions that emphasize life limitations and family struggles. At the connotative level, the meanings reflect powerlessness, limited access, and dependency on external assistance. Meanwhile, at the myth level, poverty is naturalized as an individual condition rather than a broader structural issue. These findings indicate that media not only represents reality but also shapes public understanding through the selection of visual signs that are often emotional and ideological, thereby potentially reinforcing particular perspectives toward economically disadvantaged communities.
