Abstract

Long-distance relationships (LDR) have become increasingly common among university students due to educational mobility and the growing use of digital communication media. Physical separation requires couples to adapt the way they express and receive affection in order to maintain emotional intimacy. This study aims to analyze the adaptation of love languages in digital communication among students in long-distance relationships and examine how partners interpret these expressions of affection. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with three university student couples in LDR relationships. The data were supported by screenshots of digital conversations as triangulation material and analyzed using thematic coding based on Gary Chapman’s Five Love Languages and interpersonal communication theory. The findings reveal that love languages are transformed into symbolic and digital forms. Quality Time and Words of Affirmation emerged as the most dominant forms through video calls, text messages, and shared virtual presence. Meanwhile, Acts of Service and Receiving Gifts appeared through emotional support and digitally mediated assistance. The study also identified communication shifts such as scheduled intimacy, increased self-disclosure, and post-conflict overthinking caused by the limitations of digital interaction. The success of LDR relationships is strongly influenced by consistent emotional presence and the ability to interpret small acts of affection through digital media.
