1Ethical Guideline for Journal Publication
The publication of an article in a peer reviewed journal is an essential part of the network of knowledge. It reflects the quality of the work of the authors and of the institutions that support them. For this reason, all parties involved in publishing, namely authors, editors, reviewers, the publisher, and readers, need to agree on standards of ethical behavior.
The publisher takes its responsibilities seriously and makes sure that advertising and commercial revenue do not influence editorial decisions. The publisher and the Editorial Board also help with communication with other journals and publishers when needed.
Three guiding values
Everyone involved in the journal is expected to act with neutrality, fairness, and honesty.
2Duties of Authors
| Duty | What authors must do |
|---|---|
| Reporting standards | Report original research honestly and accurately, discuss its significance objectively, and keep the data accurate and secure. The manuscript must contain enough detail and references for the research to be replicated. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements are unethical and unacceptable. |
| Data access and retention | Authors may be asked to provide raw data for editorial review, and should be ready to make the data publicly available where possible, in line with the Data Sharing Policy. Keep the data for a reasonable period after publication. The data of participants, patients, and other individuals must be kept confidential. |
| Originality and plagiarism | Submit only work that is entirely original, and cite the work or words of others properly. Plagiarism in any form, including incorrect citation or wrong attribution, is unacceptable. See the Plagiarism Policy. |
| Multiple, redundant, or concurrent publication | Do not publish manuscripts that describe essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to several journals at the same time is unethical. |
| Acknowledgment of sources | Give proper credit to the work of others, and cite the publications that influenced the research reported. |
| Authorship of the paper | Authorship is limited to those who made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. Other contributors are acknowledged. The corresponding author makes sure that all appropriate coauthors are listed, that no inappropriate person is listed, and that all coauthors have approved the final version and the submission. See Authorship and Contributorship. |
| Research involving participants | Studies must be carried out with the permission of the institutions concerned and with the informed consent of the participants. For participants who are minors, the consent of a parent or guardian is also needed. The identity of participants must be protected. The Methods section explains how permission and consent were obtained, and the editors ask authors to attach an ethics clearance form approved by an ethics committee (Komisi Klirens Etik). |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | All authors must disclose any financial or substantive conflict of interest that might influence the results or the interpretation of the manuscript, and all sources of support, including funding. See Conflicts of Interest. |
| Limitations of the research | Explain the limitations of the research. |
| Responding to reviewers | Respond to the comments of reviewers professionally and on time. |
| Use of generative AI tools | Authors who use generative AI tools in preparing a manuscript must follow the Generative AI Policies of the journal. AI systems cannot be listed as authors. |
| Fundamental errors in published works | If authors find a significant error or inaccuracy in their own published work, they must promptly tell the editors or the publisher and cooperate in a retraction or a correction. |
| Withdrawal of a manuscript | Authors who intend to withdraw a manuscript must inform the editors. |
3Duties of Editors
| Duty | What editors must do |
|---|---|
| Publication decisions | Decide which manuscripts are published on the basis of their validity and their importance for researchers and readers. The review of each manuscript is thorough, transparent, objective, and fair. |
| Guidelines and the review process | Make sure the author guidelines are easy to find and understand, assign suitable reviewers, and explain the review process to them. See the Peer Review Process. |
| Fair play | Assess manuscripts only on their intellectual content, without regard to the identity or the political views of the authors. |
| Confidentiality | Share information about a manuscript only with those who are authorized, such as the corresponding author, reviewers, editorial advisers, and the publisher. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Unpublished material in a manuscript must not be used in the research of an editor without the written consent of the author. Editors disclose their conflicts of interest and do not handle manuscripts that give rise to them. |
| Quality of the journal | Connect the needs of readers and authors, continuously improve the quality of the journal, and apply processes that ensure the quality of published work. |
| Objectivity and open minds | Promote objective freedom of opinion, stay open to new ideas or views that may conflict with their own, and avoid defending their own opinions, or those of authors or third parties, in ways that compromise objectivity. |
| Integrity of the academic record | Maintain the integrity of the academic record of authors. |
| Corrections and apologies | Issue corrections, clarifications, retractions, and apologies when needed. |
| Style, format, and content | Editors are responsible for the style and format of the works, while authors are responsible for the content and the statements made in them. |
| Feedback and evaluation | Actively seek feedback from authors, readers, reviewers, and board members, encourage the evaluation of the journal when findings arise, and assess how journal policies affect authors and reviewers so that the policies can be improved. |
| Ethics clearance and education | Help reduce errors in research and publication by asking authors to attach an ethics clearance form approved by an ethics committee (Komisi Klirens Etik), and support initiatives to educate researchers about publication ethics. |
| Encouraging revision | Encourage authors to revise their work until it is ready for publication. |
4Duties of Reviewers
| Duty | What reviewers must do |
|---|---|
| Contribution to editorial decisions | Review manuscripts assigned by the editors and report the findings, so that the editors can decide whether a manuscript is suitable for publication. A review may also help authors improve their manuscripts. Work honestly, objectively, and independently. |
| Promptness | A reviewer who feels unqualified, or who cannot review on time, must decline the invitation. The time limit for a review is 2 weeks, and any extension must be confirmed with the editorial secretariat. |
| Confidentiality | A manuscript received for review is confidential. Do not show it to or discuss it with others without the permission of the editors, and do not spread corrections, suggestions, or recommendations about it, so that the privacy of the author is protected. |
| Standards of objectivity | Reviews must be objective. Personal criticism of the author is not acceptable, and views must be stated clearly and supported by arguments. |
| Acknowledgment of sources | Check the accuracy and credibility of the references, point out relevant work that has not been cited, and tell the editors if the manuscript is substantially similar to other published work that the reviewer knows. |
| Disclosure and conflicts of interest | Privileged information gained through the review must be kept confidential and must not be used for personal advantage. A reviewer must not review a manuscript if there is a conflict of interest with an author, a company, or an institution connected to it, or if the reviewer is personally involved in the work, directly or indirectly. |
| House style and revised manuscripts | Review manuscripts according to the house style of the journal (gaya selingkung) and on scientific principles. Encourage authors to revise their manuscripts, and review revised manuscripts against the established standards. |
| Use of AI | Reviewers must not upload a manuscript to a generative AI tool. See the Generative AI Policies. |
5Duties of the Publisher and Journal Management
| Duty | What the publisher and the journal management do |
|---|---|
| Independence of decisions | Make decisions without the influence of outside interests, and make sure that commercial considerations, including advertising and commercial revenue, do not influence editorial decisions. |
| Freedom and privacy | Give editors and reviewers freedom to do their work, respect the privacy of authors, and protect confidential information of contributors, authors, editors, and reviewers. |
| Intellectual property and licensing | Protect the intellectual property and copyright of published work in line with the Copyright Notice and Licensing, and prepare the licensing and other legal requirements. |
| Funding | Manage funds from third parties openly and transparently, and make sure there is a source of funding for the continued publication of the journal. |
| Regular publication, archiving, and promotion | Publish the journal regularly (see Publication Frequency), keep published work available in the long term under the Archiving Policy, and build cooperation networks and promote the work the journal publishes. |
| Conflicts of interest | Disclose any conflict of interest that could affect the operation of the journal. |
| Identity and governance of the journal | Set the name, scope, frequency, and accreditation of the journal where needed, determine the membership of the editorial board, and define the contractual relationships among the publisher, editors, reviewers, and other parties. |
| Policies and code of conduct | Review the policies of the journal and communicate them to authors, editors, reviewers, and readers, and create a code of conduct for editors and reviewers. |
